What is "Biocidal Product"?
Biocidal products are the chemical formulations or substances used in the environment of people or in/ around the living space of people for the purpose of controlling the pests removing and/or moving away the pests, providing them to gather by dragging to a specific point. These pests may include the pests which affect the public health negatively, rats, cockroaches, mosquitos and mites, etc. Likewise many surface disinfectants used in many sectors including food sector and in hospitals and disinfectants for drinking water are in the scope of biocidal products.
Typical Examples: Disinfectants, Preservatives, Wood Preservatives, Rodenticides, Insecticides, Pest Control or Repellents.
Biocidal products are mostly used for houses in compliance with the legal rules. Most biocidal products are used for the purpose of crop protection in agriculture (pesticide); the usage of these products for agriculture is under the regulation of plant protection products.
EU Biocidal Products Directive identifies biocidal products as following:
The substances and preparations containing one or more substances - as the way that they reach to the consumer - are the substances for the purpose of eradication, changing through a chemical or a biological way and preventing the damage that are induced by pests or controlling them in a different way.
Why we need biocidal products?
Biocidal products are used for microorganism control and for fungus infestation, etc. They are necessary for prevention and eradication of harmful organisms and for increasing the quality of life; biocidal products mostly meets the civic needs.
Why biocidal products should be specially formed and which problems they cause?
Most of the biocidal products respond high chemical reaction. In the event of not to be used be used under supervision, they can cause major damage to human health (key words: allergies, asthma attacks and chronic diseases) and the environment (water treatment plants). Natural origin biocidal products should be watched out (for example some plant extracts may cause allergy).
Considering the specific biological reaction, the assessment regarding biocidal products should be practiced by experts.
What matters is to know which products can be used by general public and which can be used by experts.
We don't need broad-spectrum internecine, what we need is that specially crafted products offering specific solutions for specific problems.
1. MAIN GROUP: Disinfectants and general biocidal products
The cleaning products that have not biocidal effect as washing liquids, powders and similar products aren't ranked as biocidal products.
1.Product Type: Human hygiene biocidal products
Used for human hygiene purposes
2. Product Type: Private and public health area disinfectants and other biocidal products
Used for the disinfection of air, surfaces, materials, equipment and furniture which are not used for direct food or feed contact in private, public or industrial areas, including hospitals, as well as products used as algaecides. Usage areas include swimming pools, aquariums, bathing and other waters, air-conditioning units, walls and floors in health and other institutions, chemical toilets, waste water, hospital waste, soil and other substrates (in playgrounds).
3. Product Type: Veterinary hygiene biocidal products
Includes products used in areas in which animals are housed, kept or transported.
4. Product Type: Food and feed area disinfectants
Used for the disinfection of equipment, containers, consumption utensils, surfaces or pipework associated with the production, transport, storage, or consumption of food, feed or drink (including drinking water) for humans and animals.
5. Product Type: Drinking water disinfectants.
For both humans and animals
2. MAIN GROUP: Preservatives
6. Product Type: In-can preservatives
Used for the preservation of manufactured products, other than foodstuffs or feeding stuffs, in containers by the control of microbial deterioration to ensure their shelf life.
7. Product Type: Film preservatives
Used for the preservation of films or coatings by the control of microbial deterioration in order to protect the initial properties of the surface of materials or objects such as paints, plastics, sealants, wall adhesives, binders, papers, art works etc.
8. Product Type: Wood preservatives
For wood from and including saw-mill stage, and wood products (including preventative and curative products)
9. Product Type: Fibred, leather, rubber and polymerized materials preservatives
Includes the preservation of fibrous materials, such as paper or textile products
10. Product Type: Masonry preservatives
Used for the preservation and remedial treatment of masonry or other construction materials other than wood by the control of microbiological algal attack
11. Product Type: Preservatives for liquid-cooling and processing systems
Use for the preservation of water and other liquids used in cooling and processing systems by the control of harmful organisms such as microbes, algae and mussels (not drinking water preservation products).
12. Product Type: Slimicides
Used for the prevention or control of slime growth on materials, equipment and structures, used in industrial processes, eg on wood and paper pulp, and porous sand strata in oil extraction.
13. Product Type: Metalworking-fluids preservatives
Products used for the preservation of metalworking fluids by the control of microbial deterioration.
3. MAIN GROUP: Pest control
14. Product Type: Rodenticides
Control of mice, rats or other rodents
15. Product Type: Avicides
Control of birds
16. Product Type: Molluscicides
Control of molluscs, e.g. snails that may clog pipes
17. Product Type: Piscicides
Control of fish; excludes products for the treatment of fish diseases.
18. Product Type: Insecticides, acaricides and to control other arthropods
For example insects, arachnids and crustaceans
19. Product Type: Repellents or attractants
Used to control, harmful organisms (invertebrates such as fleas, vertebrates such as birds), by repelling or attracting, including those that are used for human or veterinary hygiene either directly or indirectly.
4. MAIN GROUP: Other biocidal products
20. Product Type: Preservatives for food and feed stocks
Used for the preservation of food or feedstuffs by the control of harmful organisms.
21. Product Type: Antifouling products
Used to control growth and settlement of fouling organisms (microbes and higher forms of plant and animal species) on vessels, aquaculture equipment or other structures used in water
22. Product Type: Embalming or taxidermist fluids
Used for the disinfection and preservation of human or animal corpses, or parts of them.
